A practical global toolkit to help investors integrate gender considerations across the climate investment lifecycle.
The Gender-Responsive Climate Finance Toolkit was developed by Kore Global and Truvalu, with support from Switzerland, to help investors put the gender–climate nexus into practice.
The work began in Bangladesh, one of the countries most exposed to climate change and a context where women face disproportionate climate impacts while also playing an important role in building more resilient businesses, households and communities. Our initial research identified a need to move beyond high-level commitments on gender and climate and provide investors with practical guidance they could integrate into their existing investment processes.
Building on this work, the toolkit has evolved into a global resource for impact investors, PE and VC funds, financial institutions and development organisations. It has been validated in three different settings — Bangladesh, Kenya and Colombia — spanning Asia, Africa and Latin America, using real investment cases to test its relevance across different markets, sectors and business models.
From ambition to practical application
The toolkit provides practical guidance and tools for integrating gender across the full climate investment lifecycle, from strategy, sourcing and due diligence through to investment structuring, portfolio management, impact measurement and exit.
It includes:
- A gender–climate framework that helps investors understand where and how gender and climate considerations intersect and where this can create both impact and investment value.
- Practical tools for each stage of the investment lifecycle, including screening and sourcing questions, due diligence tools, guidance for investment structuring and portfolio engagement.
- A Metrics Library that brings together relevant gender and climate indicators and draws on established global frameworks and standards.
- Guidance on proportionality and adaptation, helping investors select and apply the elements most relevant to the size, maturity, sector and context of an investment.
Validation across the three settings demonstrated that applying a gender–climate lens can help investors identify risks, opportunities and impacts that may be overlooked through conventional investment processes, while a focused set of material questions and indicators can be integrated into existing due diligence and impact-management systems.
