Blue Economy Gender Analysis

Verumar was a partnership between NLAI and the Philippines’ Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), funded by the UK Space Agency. The project aimed to complement and enhance the Filipino governments’ efforts to conserve and sustainably use their seas and marine resources, in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 14. This was achieved by working alongside fisheries departments and other stakeholders to scope, design and introduce new satellite-enabled system capabilities to support fisheries management and enforcement activities.

Kore Global was the Gender Lead and engaged to conduct a gender analysis and develop a gender strategy and action plan for the Verumar project. The gender analysis and strategy were developed using participatory methods in cooperation with BFAR and the Philippines Commission on Women.

The ensuing gender strategy focussed on two key priorities:

1) Ensure women’s full and effective participation in technology transfer and capacity building initiatives for national and regional stakeholders in fisheries operational monitoring, control and surveillance systems, and

2) Strengthen the enabling environment for women to increase and broaden their participation and leadership positions in teams that are involved with fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance.

Verumar’s work on gender equality sought to embed the Filipino government’s forward-thinking principles and policies in this area across the project, ensuring women’s full and effective participation and visibility.
